Two quickies (stamina, baby) that I figured I would put together.

1) What % of all the music you are listening to these days is GD/GD related vs. non-GD

2)Roll Call. Where did you lay your head last night? (it's been 6 months since we last took one, so what the hay)

60% GD / 40 other

At home 60/40 GD/Other
At work usually 100% GD but today I've played a Clash show from January '79 three times before moving on to GD August 4th '74 so it's 50/50.

Normal. (JK, West of England.)

Probably 60/40 GD/Other, but depends on the day/week/mood.

Back home in Kathmandu after a week on the beach in sunny Dubai. (Sounds glamorous, but I'm writing this by candlelight cuz we only have eight hours of electricity a day, and we're living under quilts. Dubai was considerably warmer.)

Weirdly enough, just as it's night here when it's day on your side of the world, the "ways to get warm" are reversed, too. Here, you go OUTSIDE to get warm. (High altitude sun.) Of course, that doesn't work in the morning, night, or when there's no sun ... There is indeed sun now, though, so I'm hanging out on my balcony with a nice view of the Himalayas. (Brag, brag. On the downside, in the winter, lacking Himalayan snowmelt, electricity almost completely disappears. On the upside, it's definitely not boring!)

Edit: Well, maybe not exactly a 12-hour difference ... just saw you're in England. Actually, you'd be right at home. Hereabouts even the CNN anchors have British accents, people say "lifts," and they think it's called "maths" rather than "math."

When i was up that way over the holidays, the wife made me clear out a shelf at a 7-11 before we hit the road. While we loved the new dark chocolate Kandy Kakes, we were both really disappointed with the tastyklairs. They were like half the size of what we remembered and only had a skinny little strip of chocolate on top. Krimpets were up to snuff.

When I was up this summer for my HS reunion, in addition to meeting up with Finster for lunch at the Charcoal Pit in Wilmington, I had the requisite sampling of a good cheesesteak - (wit, wiz), a hoagie as big as my head, krimpets and the peanut butter Tandy Takes. I never was a big fan of the dark chocolate Tandy Takes (but I ate them anyway). I heard that the Tandy Takes are now known as Kandy Kakes?

Hell, I must be old if I remember them as Tandy Takes.

Drake's Yodels, Ring Dings and Ho Hos were also staples of my youthful gastronomic abuses. Along with Hank's Birch Beer and Frank's Black Cherry soda.

Yep. I wrote Tandy Takes originally and thought it looked funny so i looked it up and sure enough they are now Kandy Kakes. I had a great hoagie but no cheesesteak this time (wit, provolone is my preference).

We also had a discussion of Frank's Black Cherry Wishniak. I saw another black cherry soda that said "wishniak" and was shocked. I think it was from the Stewart's root beer company. btw, wtf is wishniak?

Hey LW, I don't think there are many "gear heads" here. I think you'll find that questions about the music and/or the musicians will garner much more response than questions about "the tools of the trade"

I don't think the lack of response in your gear thread was due to board paranoia, nor to rudeness. It is pretty obvious you are not I_s, and from what I've seen it isn't likely you're one other "trolls". And the truly rude here will jump on ANY chance to flame away.

You're right, sometimes it just isn't fun. But other times the camaraderie, and the exchange of information, makes it somewhat easier to overlook the "bad".

Right next door. The tri-city area would be Hesperia, Apple Valley and Victorville. Population up to about 300,000 now!

The river is still beautiful, but five inches of rain in a 12 hour span created a great deal of damage including a break in the sewage line that runs under the river polluting a number of wells.

Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: What Percentage, Where You Are

Every now and then, I take a break for a week or so, but my practice is to be listening to complete GD tours-in season-in order on an ongoing basis. I haven't gotten sick of doing this yet somehow, after years and years of it. Usually, I do about one set per night and it's usually the second thing I listen to-the dessert, if you will. Prime listening time is when I've gotten the kids to bed, (after 8 or so) and can multi-task by listening on headphones, correcting papers, trolling the internet news sites and such and/or watching sports with the loudmouths turned way down. (Go C's!) When Dylan's on tour, I listen to his whole tour in the same way, (thanks to various bt sites you all know about). Same with the Stones. When that thing starts up, I'll be on it in "virtual" fashion. As with the GD, the charm of these tours is that each show is unique in terms of song selection and approach. Yes, less so for the Stones, but they've gotten more dynamic in their set lists in the past decade. And, I would argue they're better live now. I've tried to listen to full Furthur tours and be a good deadhead soldier, but...sigh...I dunno. No offense, but with Bobby up there, I don't see the point in J.K. singing all the Jerry songs that Bobby has been developing with Ratdog. Ok, different thread...

Primarily, I listen to unauthorized, live music recordings though I recently went through the complete studio recordings of the Stones and may do the same with Dylan. Most studio recordings I listen to these days are new, underground indie, hip-hop etc.

I have a thing about listening to an opera on most Sundays, (again I don't want to "drop a dime" as to where I get live music recordings bu the place I go frequently features European broadcasts of opera and other orchestral pieces) and try to listen to a wide variety of music every day for an average of about 2-3 hours a day.

One thing I do about once a week-usually Thursdays or Fridays-is go to Hype Machine and scroll through a week or so of audioblog postings and download 40-50 MP3's, put together a playlist and get acquainted with new, unreleased/remixed indie, electro-pop, hip-hop etc. that the audiobloggers are promoting. It's a great, free, legal way to get cutting edge music and in general, be a week to a month ahead of the curve. It's good to have some sense of what you're looking for by reading Pitchfork or audioblogs, for that matter or semi-current by reading Rolling Stone or Spin. (The latter is somewhat limited in their musical appreciations. They have been flogging the alleged virtues of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs for a good ten years now; RS, however, has improved quite a bit in terms of cultural relevance.) The result of several years of audioblog trolling is that I have around 20,000 free mp3's in my Itunes. This allows me to easily program 15 minutes of music every day before homeroom in the high school at which I am a teacher that I play over the intercom with student announcers and to barely repeat an artist in the past 4 years. (For instance, the Beatles got played more than once, but by and large I try to avoid being repetitive and mix it up constantly in terms of genres.)

I consider myself kind of an extremist in this area. Too much of everything is just enough.

Oh and I live in Red Sox Nation.

No problem. Here's what you have to do though. When you see a song that you want, click on "read full post". It will bring you to the blog. If you click on the song title, I think it brings you to Itunes or something like that. Then, when you get to the audioblogs, right click on the song titles and save as to someplace. Now, in some cases, the bloggers are just streaming the music. In some cases, they're just listing it and it's a link that, again, will take you to Itunes or the equivalent. In most cases, however, it's an MP3 file, (not bad quality either). Sometimes the mp3 actually resides on a file hosting site like yousendit. When you get there, you'll see a big download button.

% of number of songs:40% GD, 60% other. Lots of British metal, some Stones, a bit of Who, a splash of Hendrix.

% of duration of listening time: 70% GD, 30% other. 3-5 minute songs have no comparison to 20-30 minute GD stuff. Sometimes I put on the headphones and listen along to a DS, SS/WT/11, or whatever while watching the game on tv. I Can't quite do that with anyone else's music.

Rob, if you really want to talk, just Email me. I know you changed my password at LSP and read all of my PM's. I know you don't like the fact that I PM'd people telling them that you threatening your own members was not OK. I know your site is a ghost town now. None of that had anything to do with me.

You did this all on your own. You started the problem, you made the threats, and then you started to ban. Take responsibility for yourself Rob, and your actions. Blaming me for your actions is a total cop out. Stop being a coward. You are better than that.

Like I said, if you want to actually talk, just Email me. I'm willing to bury it.

I dont think Kochman is going to reach out to you, Tim. He's way too self absorbed to ever realize the he needs help. His multi-posting here as dark starz, yokosduo and so many other user ID's is a desperate attempt at seeking attention after everyone left the Lost Sailors Pub like rats abandoning a sinking ship. Kochmans spiraling plunge into failing mental health is both tragic and sad. He's already lost so much. There are support groups for vets like him. Hopefully he will seek out the help he desperately needs.

The thing that kills me about this is that it is over absolutely nothing. Who knows...All I do know is this is the second time I have tried. Whatever.

Roanoke huh? I'm 5 hours east at the Beach, daughter graduated from Tech in '07 and '09 - we were out in your neck of the woods for all but a handful of home football games. As close as you are, any plans on going to FloydFest this summer? The artist lineup is the best I've seen in 7 years. And you aren't even an hour away.
